Pre-Owned vs Vintage in luxury watches

Anyone who deals intensively with luxury Watches will inevitably come across two terms that play a central role in the buying and selling of Watches: Pre-Owned and Vintage. These two terminologies have great significance in the world of luxury Watches and are often mentioned in the same context. We want to clarify the differences.

We at Zeitauktion also have luxury Watches in our portfolio that are referred to as Pre-Owned or Vintage. It is worth taking a closer look at the use of these terms, which often appear in connection with "used," "retro," "second-hand," or "pre-owned".

What does Vintage mean for luxury Watches?

The term "Vintage" originates from the grape harvest (French "vendage"). Vintage wines have reached a certain age and high quality. They are select wines. Nowadays, Vintage is also often used in fashion or in luxury Watches.

Vintage Watches are luxury Watches that are usually 25 to 30 years old and impress with their quality craftsmanship. According to some specialist media and blogs, Watches made before 1990 are considered "Vintage". However, there is no universally valid definition or age limit. What is agreed upon, however, is that Vintage Watches combine important or typical elements of a time or era and often experience a high increase in value over time. An example is particularly rare dial colors, individual patina, or tritium luminous material used only at that time. These details from the past often make many Watches especially desirable and "select" for collectors.

It is important in this context to distinguish from Retro. These are merely modern Watches whose design is modeled after a Vintage Watch and are newly produced. They lack the corresponding "true" age of the Watch.

At Zeitauktion.com, there is a wide range of worthwhile Vintage Watches. The Breitling Chronomat, the Omega Seamaster, or a Cartier Santos are classics of Watch history.

What does Pre-Owned mean for luxury Watches?

Pre-Owned refers to luxury Watches that are usually or have been in private ownership. A Pre-Owned Watch therefore has at least one (previous) owner and, according to various sources, was made after 1990. Here too, this restriction is not clear-cut. What is important is that the Watches have been worn little to not at all, show minimal signs of use, and the high quality has been preserved.

This is also the clear distinction from "second-hand". Buyers can assume that second-hand Watches have been regularly worn and frequently used. The Watch is simply "used" and certainly shows signs of wear. A Pre-Owned Watch can be "like new" and "unworn" despite having a previous owner.

Conclusion: Vintage Watches are usually particularly rare, older, and valuable models with the charm of history. Pre-Owned Watches, on the other hand, are generally younger, with more modern technology. Both share high quality, good value retention, or potential value appreciation. Those who choose Pre-Owned usually want a modern and currently popular Watch, to avoid possible waiting times at the dealer, and/or to save some money compared to the list price.
