The company was founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer in St. Imier, Switzerland. In 1864, he patented a novel crown winding mechanism and, inspired by business trips to England in the 1880s, turned his attention to precision Chronographs. In 1916, his sons patented a Chronograph capable of measuring time intervals with an accuracy of one hundredth of a second, establishing themselves and many later Chronographs as the official timekeepers of the Olympic Games and motorsport.
