Panerai: History & Models of the Italian Luxury Watches

The history of Italian luxury watches from the house of Panerai dates back to 1860 when Giovanni Panerai laid the foundation for success by founding a watchmaking business. Initially, the watches were exclusively intended for the navy before the world gained access to various models and collections in 1993. Sylvester Stallone was responsible for the brand's popularity, triggering a true hype with a film.

History of Officine Panerai

The history of the company Officine Panerai differs significantly from that of other Watch Brands, even though the namesake laid the foundation early on. In 1860, it was Giovanni Panerai who opened a watchmaking business in Florence, marking the beginning of Panerai's history.

The great-grandson Guido Panerai was primarily responsible for the brand's success, attracting attention with numerous patents and innovations and being responsible for renaming Orologeria Svizzera to Officine Panerai.

An important milestone in the history was the development of a Dive Watch for the Italian navy. In collaboration with Rolex, who integrated the Cortébert hand-wound movement, Panerai developed its own dials with the luminous material “Radiomir”, which were excellently suited for underwater use. Later, the radiologically questionable Radiomir was replaced by Luminor, but the importance of the watches for the navy remained unchanged.

1993 marked a turning point when Panerai Watches were introduced to the general public.

Sylvester Stallone makes Panerai famous

The influence of celebrities and films on certain brands can be wonderfully seen with Panerai. When Sylvester Stallone wore a Panerai Luminor clearly visible on his wrist in the film “Daylight” (1996), it triggered a true hype. Suddenly, the watches from Italy became trendsetters, and the partnership lasted for years. The inscription “Daylight” or “SlyTech” was integrated as a tribute to the actor on selected watches.

In the fourth part of “Rambo,” it was a Panerai Marina Militare, and in “The Expendables,” a Panerai Luminor Regatta that Sylvester Stallone wore on screen. Other actors like Jason Statham or Arnold Schwarzenegger also wore various Panerai Watches in their films.

Panerai Collections and Models

Panerai Luminor Marina

Basically, all Panerai Watches can be assigned to four different collections:

 Submersible
 Luminor
 Luminor Due
 Radiomir

Of course, the collections have been expanded with certain models and lines. The historical watches from the house of Panerai are considered to be the Luminor Base, Luminor Marina, and Radiomir, while the Luminor Marina Automatic, Luminor Submersible, Luminor Powerreserve, Radiomir GMT Alarm, or the Radiomir Chrono are perceived as contemporary versions.

Prices and value increases of Panerai Watches

Especially the historical models are highly valued. A rarity are those versions made for the navy, whose sales in the past brought in more than 100,000 euros. It can be stated that a Panerai Watch is a good investment with a high probability of value increase.
