100 Years of Rolex Oyster: From an Idea to a Revolution

Introduced in 1926, the Rolex Oyster case is regarded as one of the groundbreaking innovations in watchmaking history. Its construction reliably protected the Movement from water, dust, and dirt and played a major role in establishing the wristwatch as a practical everyday timepiece. Almost a century later, Rolex honors this pioneering development with special anniversary models.

The Technical Revolution of Rolex Oyster

A look at the period before the development of the Rolex Oyster case illustrates how difficult it was to establish the wristwatch. Despite their practical advantages, wristwatches were considered poorly resistant to moisture and not very robust. The pocket watch continued to dominate the watch market. With the patenting and introduction of the world's first waterproof and dustproof watch case, Rolex fundamentally changed the world of watches. The secret lay in an ingenious construction principle consisting of a screw-down bezel, screw-down case back, and a screw-down winding crown. Together, they formed a hermetic seal that resembled an oyster and gave the case its name.

However, the technical innovation alone was not enough to convince potential buyers. Rolex therefore provided impressive proof of the performance of its construction. British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore a Rolex Oyster while crossing the English Channel. After more than ten hours in the water, the Watch was still functioning perfectly. This marketing coup became a decisive milestone for Rolex and laid an important foundation for its worldwide success.

The Birth of the Oyster Perpetual

A groundbreaking advancement in watch technology was to make a major contribution to Rolex's worldwide success in the following years. With the Perpetual Rotor, the Swiss manufacturer established automatic winding, making daily manual winding unnecessary. In 1931, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual was born, laying the foundation for one of the brand's most important watch families.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Watch Family

The year 1945 is primarily associated with the end of the Second World War. However, it also marked an important milestone in watchmaking. With the Oyster Perpetual Datejust, Rolex introduced an automatic, waterproof chronometer with a date window at three o'clock. The distinctive Cyclops lens magnified the date display and became an unmistakable identifying feature. Hans Wilsdorf described the Datejust as the “pinnacle of the watchmaking industry.”

In 1953, the watch family gained a professional Dive Watch with the Oyster Perpetual Submariner, initially water-resistant to 100 meters. By 1989, Rolex had steadily increased this figure to 300 meters. The Submariner Date also introduced a version with a date display and unidirectional rotating bezel, whose 60-minute graduation made it possible to measure dive times.

Also in 1953, Rolex introduced the Oyster Perpetual Explorer, a Watch for demanding expeditions. Its robust construction was designed to withstand temperature fluctuations and shocks. The black Dial with its distinctive numerals 3, 6, and 9 ensured excellent legibility and gave the Explorer its characteristic appearance, which it retains to this day.

Over the following decades, the model family grew to include numerous additional lines. These include the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II, the Day-Date, the Milgauss, the Lady-Datejust, the Air-King, the Cosmograph Daytona, the Sea-Dweller, and the Yacht-Master. Each of these model lines developed its own identity and appealed to different target groups with specific functions, technical innovations, and individual design elements.

The continuous development of the collections, high-quality Movement technology, new color variants, and distinctive design elements have made a major contribution to establishing Rolex worldwide as one of the best-known Watch Brands. Based on an idea for an Oyster case from 1926.
