Scope of delivery for luxury watches: Box & papers
Buying a luxury watch is associated with certain uncertainties for many – especially when it is a used model or a so-called Pre-Owned offer. One aspect that often raises questions is the scope of delivery: While some watches are offered with original Box, Papers, and additional accessories, these components are completely or partially missing in others.
In this article, we want to reassure potential buyers that purchasing a watch without Box and Papers is not automatically riskier. On the contrary: Buying without a complete scope of delivery can even bring some advantages – and in certain cases be the more attractive choice.
First, it is important to clarify what exactly is meant by Box and Papers.
Box and Papers for luxury watches
Box and Papers are very central terms for luxury watches that describe the scope of delivery of a watch. The Box is the original packaging of the watch – often high-quality crafted and brand-typical designed. It serves not only for storage but also emphasizes the collector's value. For some brands like Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe, such a box alone can be worth well over 1,000 euros on the secondary market. “Box” is a generic term: Some manufacturers deliver their watches in elegant leather cases, others in solid wooden boxes – sometimes even made of mahogany – while sportier models also use plastic or leatherette.
Today, papers mainly refer to the warranty card or the certificate that confirms authenticity, as well as occasionally the original purchase invoice. These documents are particularly relevant for proofs of origin and possible warranty claims. While older models often came with extensive paper documents or entire warranty booklets, today they mostly come as compact plastic cards. Many brands now even integrate electronic chips that can be scanned at authorized dealers to activate the warranty.
Goodies such as hangtags (tags with Reference Number), instruction manuals, travel pouches, brand books, collector coins, or gimmicks like small flashlights, with which the luminescent material can be admired, for example, in Omega, are not necessarily counted as “Box and Papers”. These additions can be interesting for collectors but are rarely of essential importance for value retention or resale.
Overall, "Box and papers" increase the value and trustworthiness of a luxury Watch – however, they are not a must if you want to acquire a high-quality and authentic piece.

Scopes of delivery for a luxury Watch
There is no uniform, generally valid definition for terms like “complete set” or “Full Set” – their scope can vary somewhat depending on brand, model, and seller. In the following section, we explain how Zeitauktion defines these terms and what scope of delivery our customers can specifically expect.
Complete set / Full Set
A so-called Full Set always includes, besides the Watch itself, the original Box and the original warranty card or the certificate of authenticity. This scope of delivery is referred to as a Full Set.
Possible but not necessarily included accessories include, for example, instruction and care manuals as well as supplementary brochures. Also, hangtags, small travel cases, or collector coins can be part of the set. Such a comprehensive scope of delivery is especially attractive for collectors and can significantly increase the resale value of the Watch.
Our tip: Ask the seller specifically if you expect a particularly extensive Full Set with additional accessories alongside "Box and papers" for certain Watches. Since brands and models differ significantly in their original scope of delivery, it is worthwhile to clarify before purchase which accessories were included from the factory with the desired Watch.
Note: An original first purchase invoice is generally not part of a Full Set.
Original Box only
The Watch is delivered with the original brand Box, but without papers or other accessories. These Boxes are visually appealing for storage and presentation but do not serve as proof of authenticity or history.
Tip: Even though the Box itself is not proof of authenticity, it can still be an indicator of the seller's reliability. If the Box deviates significantly from the original or is an inappropriate aftermarket Box, this could indicate that other information from the seller is also unreliable.

Watch only
Only the Watch itself is available, without Box, papers, or accessories. Especially with reputable dealers, this can still be an attractive and price-interesting option, particularly for older models.
Aftermarket Boxes (not original)
The Watch is delivered in a non-original Box from a third-party manufacturer. This serves for protection and presentation but has no impact on the collector's value.
Rolex Full Set as an example of the scope of delivery
Rolex, as one of the leading manufacturers on the market, emphasizes its outstanding position with a very extensive Full Set. This creates additional added value for the brand, and the buyer experiences additional appreciation when purchasing a Rolex watch.
- Original packaging / Box: Outer carton (outer box) and an inner box that has a decorative character and is even embossed with leather by Rolex. Fun fact: The box size varies: smaller boxes for classic models like the Datejust, larger boxes for professional models (e.g., Daytona, Submariner, Sky-Dweller). Collectors therefore often speak of "Small", "Medium" and "Large Box". Additionally, Rolex last revised the design of its outer boxes in 2025, with a full introduction of the new model by 2026. Since then, the outer packaging has been in a deeper green and adorned with a golden crown logo – a striking departure from the previously used light beige tone.
- Warranty card or warranty certificate: For many buyers, the warranty card or a corresponding certificate is of high relevance. Provided with the serial number, the sales date, and the dealer's stamp, the warranty card is part of a Full Set. For some brands, this is now issued digitally or integrated as a booklet. As already mentioned, Rolex has also relied on a completely new warranty card with integrated RFID chip since around 2020, which is only activated at the authorized dealer upon pickup. Thus, during the sale, the buyer's data, the sales date, and the serial number are electronically recorded and transmitted to Rolex. Only then does the official five-year Rolex warranty begin. Upon resale, the warranty card remains valid, provided the original activation was done correctly. If a watch still has a warranty, then a Full Set is naturally rated as more important than for watches whose warranty has already expired.
- Operating manual / Booklet: For the correct handling of a luxury watch, an operating manual completes the Full Set.
The extended scope of delivery can also include a chronometer certificate (e.g., COSC), care instructions, as well as so-called hangtags. For Rolex, this includes the green Rolex seal, a barcode tag, or a price tag. An original invoice can also be particularly valuable, as it can additionally increase the value during later resale. For models with a Oyster or Jubilee bracelet, some manufacturers also include spare links for the metal bracelet – a practical detail for individual adjustment.
Watches sealed with protective film are uncommon in trade – especially with Rolex. In fact, models with original factory film are not allowed to enter circulation, as Rolex strictly instructs its dealers to remove all protective films before handing over to the customer.

Advantages and disadvantages of Full Set or “just” watch
Both a Full Set and buying “just” a watch come with advantages and disadvantages. These come into play in the following aspects.
Value increase and value retention
Watches with original Box, papers, and complete accessories generally achieve significantly higher prices on the secondary market – depending on the brand and model, this can be up to a 20% premium. Conversely, buying a watch without Box and papers offers the opportunity to save noticeably. Ultimately, it depends on whether you want to keep the watch long-term or sell it at some point. Of course, the warranty also plays a role – as mentioned, this is indeed an argument for the purchase as a complete set with brand-new watches.
Trust advantage when selling
A complete set acts like a certificate of authenticity: It conveys to the buyer that the watch has been carefully handled and is authentic. This trust can not only facilitate but also speed up the sales process – watches with Box and papers often sell faster.
Attractiveness for collectors
For collectors, a so-called Full Set is often indispensable – especially with limited editions or iconic models. It increases not only the material but also the sentimental value. Many watch enthusiasts appreciate the complete package including Box, booklets, and accessories out of passion and aesthetics – the emotional aspect often plays a big role here.
Advantage of buying without Box & papers
Buying a watch without a complete set can be particularly attractive price-wise – especially if you purchase it for personal use. Such models are also often available faster and in greater variety. If the manufacturer's warranty has already expired, the warranty card is practically useless anyway. In the end, what really matters is this: The watch is worn – not the Box or warranty card.
Why do some luxury watches come without papers or Boxes?
- Loss during moving: Accessories like Box and documents are easily lost during moves or household clearances.
- Disposal due to lack of space or ignorance: In the past, packaging was often considered unnecessary and discarded – especially with Vintage watches.
- Grey market origin: Watches from the grey market are often sold without original Papers, although they are genuine and unworn.
- Old Vintage models: For very old Watches, the original warranty documents simply no longer exist.
- Careless first owner: Not everyone carefully keeps Papers and accessories – many were not aware of the collector's value at the time.
- Inherited or gifted Watches: For inherited or gifted Watches, the original scope of delivery is often no longer available.
- No proof of forgery: Missing Box and Papers do not automatically mean that the Watch is fake or dubious – there are many legitimate reasons for this.
What buyers of a pre-owned luxury Watch should pay attention to
- Trustworthy dealer: Buy only from reputable providers with verified origin, positive reviews, and ideally their own Master Workshop. Certified dealers like Zeitauktion often offer their own certificates of authenticity and warranty – this creates security.
- Authenticity check & serial numbers: Compare serial numbers on case, Movement, and if applicable, warranty card. Specialized dealers or brand archives can provide additional security, especially for Watches without Papers.
- Condition & refurbishment: Pay attention to the care Condition of the Watch: Has it been professionally refurbished? Are there excessive signs of wear? A watchmaker can expertly assess whether the technology and appearance correspond to the price.
- Documentation & scope of delivery: Even if no Papers are available, the dealer should be able to document the origin traceably. A detailed delivery note or an internal inspection protocol are good indicators.
- Realistically assess price-performance ratio: Watches without Box & Papers are often cheaper. The decisive factor is: Do you want to collect and sell yourself – or simply have a high-quality Watch for everyday use? Forgoing accessories can mean real savings potential – without loss of quality.
What is more important – Condition or Papers?
The question "What is more important – Condition or Papers?" cannot be answered generally, but depends on the type of Watch and buyer profile. For modern Watches, Condition and Papers are about equally important, especially for value retention and resale. Vintage Watches, on the other hand, are mainly evaluated based on Condition, Originality, and Authenticity. The Papers are a plus here, but often no longer available. Collectors ideally prefer both: a Full Set in good Condition – practically a true collector's item. However, if the Watch is primarily intended to be worn, Condition should take precedence, especially if the price is correspondingly attractive.
Tips for buying without Box and papers
- Obtain authenticity guarantee: Ask for a written confirmation of authenticity – at Zeitauktion, this is always part of the scope of delivery.
- Check warranty, returns & guarantee: Make sure whether the dealer offers a warranty, return option, or statutory guarantee – this creates additional trust.
- Independent inspection if uncertain: In case of doubts, an external appraisal by an experienced watchmaker can be useful – at Zeitauktion, this is usually not necessary thanks to internal inspection.
- Realistically assess price-performance: Keep in mind that the absence of the Box and papers should be reflected in the price. A fair price reduction is crucial here.

Zeitauktion: Transparency and security when buying Watches
Zeitauktion offers both Watches with complete scope of delivery (Full Set) and models without Box and papers. Whether a Watch is delivered with original accessories can be easily recognized by a corresponding (“Full Set”) badge/icon on the website as well as in the details on the scope of delivery and the product images showing the accessories.
An additional tip: You can specifically search for Full Sets or Watches without accessories using the filter function.
A special plus: At Zeitauktion, you will find not only current Reference Numbers in Full Set, but also older models and genuine Vintage Watches – true collector's items. Thanks to this variety, Zeitauktion offers the right option for every need and budget – from affordably priced everyday Watches to sought-after collector's pieces with original accessories.
Authenticity has top priority:
Every Watch – regardless of the scope of delivery – is thoroughly inspected and professionally refurbished in our in-house Master Workshop. This includes, in addition to authenticity verification, tasks such as checking and regulating the Movement, fine adjustments, cleaning and lubrication, as well as replacing worn small parts (e.g., spring bars) and a water resistance test. Afterwards, every buyer receives a certificate of authenticity that confirms the originality of the Watch in writing. In our online shop, you also benefit from 24 months warranty – so you can purchase your dream Watch safely and worry-free.
