Vintage Watch Market 2026 vs. 2025: An Overview of Current Developments

The vintage watch market has continued to consolidate its standing. In recent years, the secondary market for luxury watches has developed from a niche into one of the most influential pillars of the entire watch industry. Above all, transparent pricing makes actual demand visible while also providing valuable insights into the desirability of individual models. This article examines how the market has developed compared with the previous year and which trends stand out in particular.

Overall market: higher revenue, but hardly a price boom

In 2025, the global secondary market reached a transaction volume of 16.73 billion US dollars, an increase of 36.4 percent compared with the previous year. Median selling prices, by contrast, rose by only around 2 percent. Growth is therefore based primarily on a higher number of transactions and greater liquidity, not on sharply rising prices.

This development is being driven particularly by professional dealers, while the auction business is growing only moderately. Extreme increases in value and new auction records remain rare and are increasingly concentrated in the absolute top segment, for example among sought-after Patek Philippe references.

Two developments are particularly interesting: dealer prices now provide a more realistic insight into actual demand than unchanged manufacturer prices. At the same time, quality is becoming more important, while short-term hype is losing significance. This increasingly benefits solid and established models rather than supposedly “average watches.”

Recovery continues in 2026

Rolex Day Date 18k
The recovery in the luxury segment of the watch market is continuing. This is also reflected in the current ChronoPulse Index from Chrono24, which rose by 1.5% in May 2026 and by 4.7% over six months. Cartier performed particularly strongly at +6.6%, followed by Patek Philippe at +5.4% and Rolex at +4.5% over the six-month period. Breitling alone achieved +5.1% in May.

Vintage and neo-vintage trend broadens

Alongside classic Vintage models, the neo-vintage trend is also increasingly coming into focus. Neo-vintage watches are considered to be those from the transitional period between the late 1980s and the early 2000s. They combine modern everyday usability with historic design elements and offer features such as sapphire crystal, improved water resistance, reliable automatic movements, and robust lugs. At the same time, they preserve the charm of bygone eras through slimmer cases, aluminum bezels, or characteristic luminous materials such as early tritium and Luminova.
Even models under 5,000 euros achieved double-digit increases in value in some cases. These include the TAG Heuer Carrera with a diameter of 36 millimeters, the Rolex Turn-O-Graph, older Breitling models, and the Cartier Santos 2961.

Market remains highly selective

Well-known and liquid references usually find a buyer quickly, while less sought-after models remain on the market considerably longer. The median selling time was around 61 days in 2025, whereas the median age of unsold listings was 199 days. As a result, Condition, originality, provenance, and realistic price expectations are becoming increasingly important. The market continues to be dominated by a small number of major brands. Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguetlead the segment, with Rolex alone accounting for around 36.8 percent of worldwide secondary-market revenue. Genuine liquidity and strong resale security are therefore decisive factors.
Conclusion: 2025 was characterized above all by increasing liquidity and noticeable market consolidation. In 2026, by contrast, a moderate yet more broadly supported recovery is emerging. Smaller Vintage and neo-vintage models, selected Cartier watches, and classic Rolex references appear particularly interesting. Well-preserved watches from the mid-priced segment also offer promising prospects. High demand, a convincing Condition, and a traceable history remain decisive, as the market is increasingly rewarding quality and long-term desirability rather than short-term trends.
