Artists and Watches: The Influence of Art on Craftsmanship

The artisanal perfection of the Métiers d’Art is especially evident in the luxury segment. Houses like Chanel, Cartier, and Vacheron Constantin embody a skill based on highly specialized techniques combined with extraordinary artistic sensitivity. In a tribute to Alberto Giacometti, we focus on the inspiring interplay between art and craftsmanship.

On January 11, 1966, now 60 years ago, one of the most important sculptors of modern times, Alberto Giacometti, passed away. His artistic legacy lies in the development of a distinctive visual language that made him one of the defining figures in 20th-century art history. The elongated, fragile-looking sculptures he created still convey a deep sense of isolation, existential tension, and human vulnerability and are considered iconic references of modern sculpture.

The extraordinary status Giacometti holds as an artist is evident, not least, in the art market. His sculpture "L’homme qui marche I" (1960) fetched around 104 million US dollars (approximately 74 million euros) at Sotheby’s in 2010, setting an unprecedented record at the time. An impressive testament to how enduringly Giacometti’s work continues to shape the art world today.

Métiers d'Art Tribute to the Quest of Time: Limited Watch Honors Giacometti

Métiers d'Art Tribute to the Quest of Time

On the occasion of its 270th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin presented in 2025 an extraordinary masterpiece of watchmaking: the Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Quest of Time, limited to only 20 pieces. At its center is a finely modeled and hand-engraved figure made of 18-carat 3N gold-plated bronze, a subtle nod to the legendary Bras en l’air pocket watch from 1930. With raised arms, the sculpture indicates the hours and minutes on two retrograde sectors, while the background of the dial shows the starry sky over Geneva as it appeared on the founding day of the Maison in 1755.

In its aesthetic expression, the figure inevitably recalls the iconic sculptures of Alberto Giacometti. The delicate, almost floating titanium figure harmoniously integrates into the watch’s composition and underscores the ambition to merge traditional craftsmanship, innovative watch technology, and artistic inspiration into a unity.

The price of this extraordinary watch is disclosed only upon request. Industry experts estimate its value at around 400,000 Swiss francs.

Vacheron & Constantin: Métiers d’Art Collection

Vacheron & Constantin - Métiers d’Art Collection

In addition to the unique “Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Quest of Time,” Vacheron Constantin maintains an independent Métiers d’Art collection dedicated to high art. The manufacture draws its inspiration from art, history, and culture and translates these multifaceted themes into exceptional watchmaking narratives.

The thematic range is remarkable: from the poetic interpretation of the Chinese zodiac signs, such as in "The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac – The Year of the Snake," to scientific references like "Tribute to Naturalists – Cape of Good Hope," to historical motifs in "Tribute to Great Civilizations – Bust of Augustus." Each of these watches exemplifies an extraordinary combination of narrative depth, artisanal virtuosity, and design excellence – setting standards in the segment of haute horlogerie.
