ZEITAUKTION – NOMOS GLASHUETTE

The history of NOMOS Glashütte is still young compared to many traditional luxury brands. Since its founding in 1990, the manufactory has successfully established itself in the world of high-quality luxury watches despite numerous challenges. Through consistent in-house developments in technology and design, NOMOS today operates almost completely independently and manufactures around 95 percent of the value creation of its movements directly in Glashütte, significantly more than legally required.

Even the brand name emphasizes this claim. NOMOS comes from Greek and stands for “law” or “order.” Precision, symmetry, and a clear design language continue to shape the identity of the manufactory to this day. Models like the slim Tangente, the purist Orion, or the modern Metro embody this philosophy in an impressive way.

The Young History of NOMOS

Like few other companies, NOMOS Glashütte stands for a new beginning after the political change in the GDR. Founded in January 1990 by Roland Schwertner, the brand played a pioneering role in reviving the traditional watchmaking location of Glashütte. The first steps were modest, taking place in an apartment with three watchmakers and the distinctive design drafts of Susanne Günther. From these beginnings, the internationally recognized manufacture developed. Today, the historic "Bahnhof" forms the heart and home of NOMOS in Glashütte.

German and Swiss Watchmaking Compared

While Switzerland is considered the cradle of modern luxury Watches, a unique philosophy of watchmaking developed in Saxon Glashütte. Brands like A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte Original, Nomos Glashütte, and Mühle-Glashütte still stand for the highest precision, technical substance, and a restrained form of luxury. Characteristic are elaborately refined manufacture calibers with typical features such as the Glashütte three-quarter plate, blued screws, or hand-engraved balance cocks. German Watches also differ significantly in design: instead of striking elegance, clear lines, functional design, and a timeless aesthetic dominate, influenced as much by Bauhaus as by over 180 years of Saxon watchmaking tradition. Thus, Glashütte embodies an independent interpretation of Haute Horlogerie – technically sophisticated, authentic, and to this day closely connected to its historical origin.

NOMOS DUW 6101 Werk

NOMOS as a technical high-flyer

A defining feature of NOMOS Glashütte is the exceptionally high level of in-house manufacturing combined with genuine manufacture calibers, which are still offered at attractive prices. A central role is played by the NOMOS Swing System, which allowed the brand to break free from dependence on Swiss suppliers and independently produce the entire escapement with balance wheel, hairspring, anchor, and escape wheel. The neomatik calibers DUW 3001 and DUW 6101 enable the particularly slim design that characterizes many NOMOS watches. The manufacture draws on traditional Glashütte features such as the three-quarter plate, striping finish, and heat-blued screws.

At the forefront is the iconic Tangente, but the Ahoi as a sporty Dive Watch, the purist Orion, and the elegant Lambda also impress with their unique character. NOMOS also shows stylistic courage to explore new paths. The distinctive square Tetra as well as the curved tonneau case of the NOMOX Lux open up completely new perspectives and appeal to a whole new target audience.
