ZEITAUKTION – BRUNO SÖHNLE

The Saxon watch landscape received a surprising new addition in the year 2000 with the Bruno Söhnle Watch Atelier Glashütte. The brand deliberately took an unusual path. While the traditional manufacturers mainly focused on mechanical movements, Bruno Söhnle showed real courage with elaborately refined quartz watches. The range is complemented by high-quality mechanical models. The goal was to create a low-maintenance and affordable watch from Glashütte that consciously stands out from the established brands at the location.

Accordingly, Bruno Söhnle's portfolio is very versatile. Models like Pesaro, Rondo, Turin, Merano, or Bologna combine elegant design with a wide selection of dial colors. Most watches remain priced under 1000 euros, even though the brand is considered part of the high-end luxury watch segment. The Glashütte craftsmanship remains indispensable, forming the foundation of every watch at Bruno Söhnle and underlining the brand's high-quality standards.

History with a Comeback

As Ferdinand Adolph Lange (1815 to 1875) gained valuable experience on his travels to England and France, especially Paris, he laid the foundation for his later path as a visionary watchmaker. With great dedication and supported by a loan from the Royal Saxon Ministry of the Interior, he founded the first watchmaking school in Glashütte, creating the basis for an extraordinary success story. After World War II, the manufactory was expropriated and the name A. Lange & Söhne disappeared from the scene for decades. The reestablishment in 1990 finally marked a spectacular comeback that permanently changed the world of luxury watches. A new chapter in watchmaking history was written in Glashütte.

German and Swiss Watchmaking Compared

While Switzerland is considered the cradle of modern luxury Watches, a unique philosophy of watchmaking developed in Saxon Glashütte. Brands like A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte Original, Nomos Glashütte, and Mühle-Glashütte still stand for the highest precision, technical substance, and a restrained form of luxury. Characteristic are elaborately refined manufacture calibers with typical features such as the Glashütte three-quarter plate, blued screws, or hand-engraved balance cocks. German Watches also differ significantly in design: instead of striking elegance, clear lines, functional design, and a timeless aesthetic dominate, influenced as much by Bauhaus as by over 180 years of Saxon watchmaking tradition. Thus, Glashütte embodies an independent interpretation of Haute Horlogerie – technically sophisticated, authentic, and to this day closely connected to its historical origin.

A watch manufacturer as a gift

At the age of 60, Bruno Söhnle decided on an unusual new beginning. Coming from Swabia, he fulfilled one of his greatest wishes by founding his own manufactory in the year 2000, after having already been closely connected to the industry. The company headquarters was chosen to be the historic residence of Julius Aßmann, one of the most legendary Glashütte watch pioneers of the 19th century. After establishing the brand, Bruno Söhnle handed over his position to his daughter Stephanie Söhnle, who still leads the company today.
