Omega and the Moon Landing: "First Watch on the Moon"

The Omega Moonwatch has made watch history. But behind the connection between Omega and the moon lies much more than many enthusiasts suspect. In fact, it was initially a coincidence that brought the brand into manned spaceflight long before the first astronaut set foot on the moon wearing an Omega, and the myth began. To this day, the Moonwatch remains a fixed part of the collection, having been carefully developed over time and complemented by numerous variants.

Mercury Atlas 8 Mission: A Coincidence Makes History

The Moonwatch is usually immediately associated with the moon landing. However, the story began several years earlier. In 1962, astronaut Wally Schirra wore an Omega Speedmaster with the reference CK 2998 on his wrist during the Mercury Atlas 8 mission. The watch was not official equipment but his private timepiece. Without realizing it, he brought Omega into space for the first time and laid the foundation for an extraordinary success story.

Omega Passes NASA’s Toughest Tests

NASA quickly realized how important reliable timekeeping is for manned missions. Therefore, it invited leading watch manufacturers to test their models under extreme conditions. Brands like Rolex, Breitling, Longines, and Omega took on this demanding challenge.

The watches had to endure a series of extreme stress tests. They were exposed to temperatures from minus 18 to plus 93 degrees Celsius, had to function in a vacuum, simulate intense vibrations during rocket launch, and withstand severe shocks in various directions.

The result was clear. Only the Omega Speedmasterpassed all tests within the required parameters. On March 1, 1965, it was officially declared "Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions". This laid the foundation for its legendary reputation and paved the way to the moon.

The Moon Landing (1969): A Myth is Born

The moon landing marked the beginning of a story for Omega that goes far beyond technology and continues to fascinate today. Actually, it was not Neil Armstrong who wore his Omega on his wrist, but Buzz Aldrin. With his Speedmaster, he stepped onto the lunar surface, making it the legendary “Moonwatch.”

Omega Becomes the Savior of Apollo 13

How indispensable this watch really was became clear shortly afterward during the dramatic Apollo 13 mission. After an explosion on board, the crew was forced to abort the mission. To save energy, the onboard computers were shut down, and suddenly precise timekeeping became vital for survival.

For a safe return to Earth, the engine had to be fired for exactly 14 seconds to achieve the correct entry angle into the atmosphere. At this crucial moment, Jack Swigert relied on his Omega Speedmaster and timed the burn with utmost accuracy. The maneuver succeeded, and the astronauts returned safely.

In recognition of this extraordinary achievement, NASA awarded Omega the “Silver Snoopy Award”, its highest honor for contributions to the safety of manned spaceflight.

Which is the True Omega Moonwatch?

Today, when people talk about the Omega Moonwatch, they usually think of the classic Omega Speedmaster Professional 42 mm with its distinctive 42-millimeter case diameter. But what once began as a functional tool for spaceflight has long since evolved into a multifaceted collection.

The iconic, deep matte black dial that preserves the original character of the watch remains especially popular. However, there is also a white lacquered variant whose design is inspired by astronauts’ space suits and historical prototypes. A modern touch is added by the so-called “Reverse Panda” with its deep black glossy lacquer dial and contrasting white subdials, giving the design a special dynamic.

A touch of luxury also finds its place in the world of the Moonwatch. The Omega Moonshine Gold Speedmaster shines in a soft yellow gold tone reminiscent of the moon’s glow. The Omega Sedna Gold Speedmaster impresses with a warm, reddish shimmer, while the Omega Canopus Gold Speedmaster exudes a particularly elegant aura with its bright white gold.

Today, watch enthusiasts face an impressive variety, and that is exactly the appeal: Each Moonwatch tells its own story and offers the opportunity to wear a piece of this unique tradition on the wrist.
